I've been hard at work weaving this summer. Now that I'm finished my Master's Degree (whoot!), I have a lot more free time to happily funnel into craft. Next step is a big ol' shop update - which, of course, necessitates professional-ish photos of my work. </div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
For now, though, I present these more candid versions, for your enjoyment :)</div>

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjoSek9sYnr5F-_o9_x3SAtTrNSsOI93vKP-rgN_ScboIode_1zLMqKLzJwkDPsoUIG5eiT8-jIlgS0PtmvH9K4-qhwPrXmmyE9rH1JQPWrQjUpSK44v-qSHPds8Exgsu0bwgsiAY9xPmt5/s1600/IMG_6756.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjoSek9sYnr5F-_o9_x3SAtTrNSsOI93vKP-rgN_ScboIode_1zLMqKLzJwkDPsoUIG5eiT8-jIlgS0PtmvH9K4-qhwPrXmmyE9rH1JQPWrQjUpSK44v-qSHPds8Exgsu0bwgsiAY9xPmt5/s640/IMG_6756.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I have a process, by now, for moving to a new place - step 1: Move, unpack, decorate, etc. Step 2: Find the nearest craft school and sign on up for something. So, when I chose to come to Worcester, Massachusetts for grad school (a fine decision, as it has luckily turned out), I wasted little time in booking myself for an enameling class at the <a href="https://www.worcester.edu/WCC/">Worcester Center for Crafts</a>. For me, this kind of thing has never not been a good decision. In fact, I'll be starting a new course this Fall on stone carving/lapidary - so stay tuned for my first attempts at that. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I've played around with enameling a bit in the past (at the <a href="https://www.folkschool.org/">Folkschool</a> and at <a href="https://creativearts.haywood.edu/professional-crafts-program/">Haywood</a>). It's a fun and engaging process, somewhere at the intersection of glass and metalwork. In the most basic version, you are typically applying fine glass powder to metal (usually copper), then using a kiln to melt and fuse those materials together. The results can be varied and gorgeous, and I really only scratched the surface of what can be done. Metalwork doesn't always lend itself easily to vibrant color, so enameling is a great solution for that! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi85nAXvNikjF3oL317gHnHJWKtydqBFWki9-vewL1ubTxDnwvnyTiNZE7G2ikTDYkL6AjXa2nuMeq_ck0ugyTTyO-fYXRGjMyUYKzr4OyIetfnrDhk7Ail3Udgn9QQn3LrI9sRaEV0JY_l/s1600/IMG_6711.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi85nAXvNikjF3oL317gHnHJWKtydqBFWki9-vewL1ubTxDnwvnyTiNZE7G2ikTDYkL6AjXa2nuMeq_ck0ugyTTyO-fYXRGjMyUYKzr4OyIetfnrDhk7Ail3Udgn9QQn3LrI9sRaEV0JY_l/s640/IMG_6711.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Above, some of the materials needed for the process: sifters, enamel powder and <a href="http://www.firemountaingems.com/itemdetails/H206193BS?engine=google&campaign=[ADL]+[Non-Brand]+[PLA]+[Shopping]+-+Neutral&adgroup=[PLA]+[Shopping]+Category+-+Jewelry+Supplies&kwid=productads-adid%5E208603867642-device%5Ec-plaid%5E339515721073-sku%5EH206193BS-adType%5EPLA">Klyr-fire</a> (used to hold powder in place until the kiln).</div>

It's operated by the National Parks Service, and it's a great option to explore if you're in the area and interested in textile history. Some of the machines are still set to operate, and the sound of a single loom really drives home what the <a href="http://faculty.uml.edu/sgallagher/Mill_girls.htm">Lowell Mill Girls</a> experienced everyday - it was a skilled, difficult job. If you have an interest in feminism, the history of women working in the United States and labor rights, so much the better - there's a lot to go deep about in the way these men and women organized, and in the ways in which their fates and those of their industry were so tightly entwined.<br />
<br />
For me, of course, it's always fascinating to see the spinning and weaving that I enjoy at the smallest and most intimate scale done at a massive and industrial one. The processes are not so different, but the effect is intensely so. For more places like this I can vouch for as a textile tourist, check out the <a href="https://www.pendleton-usa.com/custserv/custserv.jsp?pageName=MillTours&parentName=Heritage">Pendleton Mill in Pendleton, Oregon</a> or the <a href="https://www.willametteheritage.org/exhibits/">Thomas Kay Woolen Mill, at the Willamette Heritage Center</a> in Salem OR.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiXExZE-EInIzmrjUjHkEvJbjbM7w5E31IBayNxDPKGM9RQ5uOMDPR-o5yKQOf6SNo3oqVpipcVfJW8qdldWusc-H6PqiWr3a8UxC_PHkhyyoa9lTyH85IFx1CCp-FKBqedaQDYRusY3jdu/s1600/IMG_6658.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiXExZE-EInIzmrjUjHkEvJbjbM7w5E31IBayNxDPKGM9RQ5uOMDPR-o5yKQOf6SNo3oqVpipcVfJW8qdldWusc-H6PqiWr3a8UxC_PHkhyyoa9lTyH85IFx1CCp-FKBqedaQDYRusY3jdu/s640/IMG_6658.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Have you ever watched the show <a href="http://www.hgtv.com/shows/flea-market-flip">Flea Market Flip</a>? It's a fine way to indulge a DIY competition show urge - basically, two teams go to New England flea markets, pick out older items, and (along with a very capable looking team) repurpose their finds in some way or another and try to sell them in New York. The team with the highest profit wins. Anyway, so - I enjoy this show, though sometimes of course I find myself wishing they'd leave a patina on, put the spray paint down and walk away. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
But! Imagine my excitement on finding out that one of their most frequent flea market stops (which I'd long yearned to visit) is only about half an hour away from me here in Worcester. <a href="https://brimfieldantiquefleamarket.com/">Brimfield Flea Market</a> is immense, exciting, overwhelming and happens twice a year. Yes, please. I went alone and wandered, and I was indeed in a happy place. I actually didn't buy much (some costume jewelry and vintage textiles) but the pictures came out pretty well, if I do say so myself. Next time around, I'm bringing back-up to carry anything gorgeous and heavy that I might need to acquire. </div>

<br />
I used a peg loom and a mix of natural and dyed shetland and lincoln fleece locks to create this fine fluffy object. There's something about this particular piece that makes me smile…just so cartoony, somehow? Either way, another version in pink and oranges in already in the works. This version is mounted on copper, which adds a certain something.<br />
<br />
Also, now seems as good a time as any to a quick weaving process pic. I'm planning on talking a lot more about the wonders of peg loom weaving soon, so stay tuned.<br />
<br />
In the meantime, here's a piece made with a variety of wool, handspun and recycled yarns, and some vintage floral ribbon. Pardon the mess, but also please feel free to admire my desk, which makes me feel very official as I work from home (probably because it weighs a gazillion pounds and looks like it belongs to in a 1960s elementary school classroom; head of the class!).<br />

<br />
We left Portland!<br />
<br />
Peter and I are settling in to a new life in lovely Eugene, Oregon. I have to say, it's a positive move in nearly every regard. The major exception is that I need to set my studio back up from scratch, which is a pain…plus, man I really loved that space.<br />
<br />
Well, I have a new office space and garage workshop here. About a week in, there remains much to do in getting everything set up. Baby steps. But I assure you and myself that it will eventually be awesome.Stephaniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14505635857297464936noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8916390166015284211.post-12367882591905498292014-07-18T20:29:00.004-04:002014-07-18T20:32:16.394-04:00More weaving with handspun, raw fleece, and some other odds and ends<div style="text-align: center;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9C-32kKNLXX_eo2OiztUN-93GJERg5p_n2mfEEFYj1rxZurEsERblg4_TNKzDhV9Z-MZRpnUOWHUuWQL8fKg9LEAcocJG0goDKN3aAbDPPrrabYgVfIqFyNxC7quo2AIIXXW2Bqw_a7eX/s1600/IMG_4701.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9C-32kKNLXX_eo2OiztUN-93GJERg5p_n2mfEEFYj1rxZurEsERblg4_TNKzDhV9Z-MZRpnUOWHUuWQL8fKg9LEAcocJG0goDKN3aAbDPPrrabYgVfIqFyNxC7quo2AIIXXW2Bqw_a7eX/s1600/IMG_4701.jpg" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
As promised, I am here to share some more weaving projects from my very obsessive past few days. Weaving in such a simple format like this is so satisfying; compared to using a <a href="http://www.miloknows.com/2013/11/experiments-in-new-skill-acquisition.html">massive floor loom</a>, this process is so much more experimental and free form. I totally understand now how craftspeople in the 1960s and 70s fiber arts explosion got so caught up in this kind of work! The possibilities for color, pattern and texture are much more open than you would think, even given the limitations built into the process. It's elemental - plain weave is the basis, but from there materials take center stage. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And so, here are the three weavings I've completed in the last week! The first one is fairly small, about 14 by 20 for the frame. There is BFL roving, Lincoln fleece, raw flax fiber and, of course, some of my handspun. The hot pink is nylon twine.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This one is the same size, and uses similar materials. The primary difference is that I added in some bright red nylon pom poms. I quite like how those came out.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEil4Py2aVhdLVqPuV1-UBSh3YFUzqKFRbDTSJmZY8cRgcbGn9cKGLjXH4mWXm7IOem1sQKxmy68U-mrQC-lmlobLpdzB0EHzLL7KsEnIRNQE46cpE7_3HLKZTRxDmifuiUJCr-36oB6QBoq/s1600/IMG_4710.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEil4Py2aVhdLVqPuV1-UBSh3YFUzqKFRbDTSJmZY8cRgcbGn9cKGLjXH4mWXm7IOem1sQKxmy68U-mrQC-lmlobLpdzB0EHzLL7KsEnIRNQE46cpE7_3HLKZTRxDmifuiUJCr-36oB6QBoq/s1600/IMG_4710.jpg" height="640" width="496" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And here's the largest piece, about the size of small entryway rug. I like the look of these weavings still in the frames/looms. It sets them off nicely. This piece features fleece and handspun, in a wide variety of color and material. </div>
<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
My stepfather, Bob, is a very talented woodworker. He has made musical instruments, lovely wood turned bowls, and many other pieces. Lately, he's been spending a lot of time on making pens on the lathe. While I was in Philly a few weeks ago, I was lucky enough to get a quick tutorial on this process. </div>

We used a small piece of buckeye burl, which has a mix of gray and blue-ish threads running through it. The woodturning process smooths and polishes the wood down so that you end up seeing the natural detail in the wood much more than you do looking at the raw materials. </div>

I've noticed that there are an awful lot of rustic weavings/wall hangings showing up in the blogs I follow, lately. For instance, check out this abundantly helpful tutorial at <a href="http://www.abeautifulmess.com/2014/07/weaving-class-the-basics.html">A Beautiful Mess</a>.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
This internet-y influence coalesced for me when I discovered a cheap kid's toy at the Goodwill by the pound - a small, fully functional peg loom. And so! It was decided. I've been playing around with tassels, fringes, rya knots and, most excitingly for me, the use of unspun and raw wool locks!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Stay tuned for a much bigger project in the near future, with a janky but effective handmade loom. </div>

I have been going through my collection of Lincoln wool locks, and been forced to come to the realization that I have a few too many colorful odds and ends just hanging out. So: I used them! One of the best things about throwing yourself into a craft, in my experience, is that you amass a great store of supplies and materials. With the right mindset, going through your back stock can be a very freeing creative process. See - crazy quilts, collages, anything in a million different color ways and materials. This, as an artsy/crafty person, is why I never have been, and never will be, a minimalist when it comes to possessions.</div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYMnjs7u088F33qI4AvtUdB_C-C_Q3TigDOGoRvnxKT7Ow9CML6sjWKg_Eu-JYGylEdXe34tDJmeBUkwxgRp40Xs5ZuuvhkW8eP7zMTlQQPuxJK6qJPJ867if_t1D9aRCIG2DERTCBTIvF/s1600/IMG_4658.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYMnjs7u088F33qI4AvtUdB_C-C_Q3TigDOGoRvnxKT7Ow9CML6sjWKg_Eu-JYGylEdXe34tDJmeBUkwxgRp40Xs5ZuuvhkW8eP7zMTlQQPuxJK6qJPJ867if_t1D9aRCIG2DERTCBTIvF/s1600/IMG_4658.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></td></tr>

<div style="text-align: center;">
So I spun up an array of mixed up singles from this bounty. I didn't card the wool in this case; I was going for very textural to a little shaggy yarn. The finished product I had in mind would look handmade, in the best way possible - uneven, unexpected, random-but-deliberate. </div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
You know, I think I've always been someone inspired by three things, primarily:</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<ol>
<li style="text-align: left;">Process (I love to create something start to finish, and to lose myself in the familiar rhythms of washing, carding, dyeing, etc…); </li>
<li style="text-align: left;">Materials (fiber, metal, vintage fabrics - taking a collage/assembly approach to creating); and</li>
<li style="text-align: left;">Tradition (once again, it's all about losing one's self in familiar rhythms, including those that have existed long before I was born).</li>
</ol>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I may never be able to pack all my belongings in a single suitcase, or even a car, but I've come to peace with it. Frankly, at the moment, I feel like I'm living the dream.</div>

<br />
I recently got back from a three-week long work/family visit trip to the East Coast. I brought many skeins of handspun - mostly Lincoln wool and llama, hand dyed nice and bright. And I left with eight completed cowls!<br />
<br />
My goal is to line these with some reclaimed silk fabric for extra warmth and softness against the skin. Stay tuned for an update on that project (I just got a brand new sewing machine, so fingers crossed that I can make it work properly).<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="text-align: center;">I've been quite busy lately, working on a major shop update. I've also been creating a great deal of yarn in bright shades with deep texture </span>and luster - I have gotten a gorgeous hoard of local Lincoln wool, courtesy of my new friends at <a href="http://growingseedsfarm.com/">Growing Seeds Farm</a>, twenty miles away in Corbett, OR. I was lucky enough to be invited to a sheep shearing there last week, which I must say, was a very cool and interesting experience (which I fully intend to document - stay tuned). </div>

This is a cowl I'm working on which some of that Lincoln, plus a touch of Llama from the same farm. I'm loving the bright, crayola colors and quirky, unpredictable mix of stripes. I'm hoping to list a whole batch of these cowls sometime in the not too distant future. They are incredibly warm, will wear wonderfully, and each one is unique and unreproducible. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<i>The work in progress is accompanied by a toy llama that I picked up a few months ago in <a href="http://www.miloknows.com/2014/01/yarn-shoppin-in-santiago-chile.html">Santiago</a>. Just seemed fitting. </i></div>

I've been sourcing a lot of new wool lately, which has meant for some exciting deliveries. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Most recently, I received 4 whole pounds of raw Coopsworth fleece, from the lovely and recommended <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/baysideyarnandfiber">Bayside Yarn and Fiber</a> in Coos Bay, Oregon.<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
Much washing, dyeing, carding and spinning awaits. Happy Friday to me!</div>

This is a step by step of the creation of a bulky plied yarn. The yellow and purple roving is Polworth, which I crockpot dyed in semi-random splotches, and then pre-drafted into many smaller slivers prior to spinning. The brown single is a carded blend of natural colored Targhee and dyed purple BFL.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKD-eDbApr7v7fE2iRQxc5qotyXKy6n7utFHMRzhzfsVwLJRCdvsihfhq-LmlYRaD3jJzhAcNRjGEkJ0OXIPAkyFcu1fepx3Nb53eoXJGyH7y8wbK01ujMg20dluar1MYUkQGQzRkv6Nxv/s1600/purple+and+yellow+process+yarn.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKD-eDbApr7v7fE2iRQxc5qotyXKy6n7utFHMRzhzfsVwLJRCdvsihfhq-LmlYRaD3jJzhAcNRjGEkJ0OXIPAkyFcu1fepx3Nb53eoXJGyH7y8wbK01ujMg20dluar1MYUkQGQzRkv6Nxv/s1600/purple+and+yellow+process+yarn.png" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
As we all know, yellow and violet are color wheel sanctioned complimentary colors. </div>

Stephaniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14505635857297464936noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8916390166015284211.post-66456389601632868642014-02-27T11:00:00.002-05:002014-02-27T11:00:55.149-05:00Busy, busy: A bit of spinning, of late<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I've been enjoying the slowly warming weather (though, it should be noted that this tends to equal rain here in Portland; what can you do?).</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
I got a nice shipment of fleece a few weeks back, consisting of seven pounds of Icelandic long wool (very fun to work with, with a super long staple length and a pleasant halo effect), and five-ish pounds of BFL lambswool (super full of veggie matter, unfortunately, but nice and soft and lustrous once I got that sorted out). </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Plus which, I visited <a href="http://www.cascadealpacas.com/">Cascade Alpacas</a> in Hood River OR to pick up some absolutely lovely raw alpaca. I must stress this--I've ordered alpaca and purchased it at fiber festivals, and Cascade's is by far my favorite. Clean, soft, beautiful. If you're ever in that part of the world (maybe 45 minutes outside of Portland), I'd recommend a visit. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So: much to spin with!</div>

Hi there! Here are three more of the cowls I've been working on lately, big and squishy and colorful and damned warm. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This first one is shorter, almost like a (gasp!) dickie, meant to fill the space between coat collar and the rest of you. The handspun ribbing at the top is a mix of BFL and hand carded, hand dyed alpaca, so it's very soft against the skin. In the middle, the pink yarn is some reclaimed wool that I over dyed in shades of bright pink, with a simple slip stitch pattern in purple wool corespun.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZwKIUT8ZBaG60Ycvf0rEaHIU5osOsf8ltEHYGY4c6MMb3AXCsEhXPGWA0R4acs3VZo1IjrNZOsk1sGtJdUceGzfpDEbjGJRqSEOL-y1oqnbu7j6htV_85lXmDQmZvxkWAqVoG69_XYSho/s1600/pink+cowl.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZwKIUT8ZBaG60Ycvf0rEaHIU5osOsf8ltEHYGY4c6MMb3AXCsEhXPGWA0R4acs3VZo1IjrNZOsk1sGtJdUceGzfpDEbjGJRqSEOL-y1oqnbu7j6htV_85lXmDQmZvxkWAqVoG69_XYSho/s1600/pink+cowl.png" height="640" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This is a longer cowl with a great drape to it, done in a mix of alpaca and sparkle corespun (the green and purple) and BFL/alpaca two ply handspun. There are a lot of great colors and textures mixed all throughout.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgh-xLt0VR-Dy28nRYr5oTycOce0BQ6guqvBLMBGEEubKV5SRuAzPNz4koqsWiWdrWLeIOrYywdcUOJpRu1-4k58sAKnAqLDPWMTH0QBAQufhoFc9ht-m4qYRS22qRKGGyo8kNZE6gBAmXz/s1600/purple+and+green+cowl.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgh-xLt0VR-Dy28nRYr5oTycOce0BQ6guqvBLMBGEEubKV5SRuAzPNz4koqsWiWdrWLeIOrYywdcUOJpRu1-4k58sAKnAqLDPWMTH0QBAQufhoFc9ht-m4qYRS22qRKGGyo8kNZE6gBAmXz/s1600/purple+and+green+cowl.png" height="640" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This last piece uses dramatic stripes of over dyed reclaimed yarn in several red tones. In between, I used a mix of my various handspun yarns, including corespun alpaca/wool (with sparkly bits), plied alpaca in pinks and greens, and plied BFL/llama in blue, green and white.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhpDaBdLkzCzjZkDE_u8JVDv-Qt6dMHFWiFzBMKhcDNCZqogkufz6iIhi-qkkm68EugM1aMnUCyPcvY0IEHneEUb37o0lQzZApkjr8kIhNjOLy2HSILf-hau9-5UIeXdJWUnr6U8eSTwc-u/s1600/red+cowl.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhpDaBdLkzCzjZkDE_u8JVDv-Qt6dMHFWiFzBMKhcDNCZqogkufz6iIhi-qkkm68EugM1aMnUCyPcvY0IEHneEUb37o0lQzZApkjr8kIhNjOLy2HSILf-hau9-5UIeXdJWUnr6U8eSTwc-u/s1600/red+cowl.png" height="640" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I must say, these are super fun to put together--and to wear. I made myself one that I've been getting quite a lot of use out of. It's cold outside! Head over to the <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/miloknows">shop</a>, where I'll be adding a number of these cowls in the next few days.</div>

So: my very dear friend got married in Santiago last week. I was lucky enough to be able to attend the wedding, which was beyond wonderful. I'll share a bit more about the trip in general soon!</div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi42CxqU95OOfVb8pzwd7grF14Ov6DhQantQC3XV3LUZA-ISbBy9DsEXxnkTrnzTWMh4wm_iqWBHShfaNcfXTiqzVJp-Qi7oNalglHl_dGsk8yEkz0we4BpXqutpyu8fDVGJs-QNbX7FV-j/s1600/IMG_3916.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="478" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi42CxqU95OOfVb8pzwd7grF14Ov6DhQantQC3XV3LUZA-ISbBy9DsEXxnkTrnzTWMh4wm_iqWBHShfaNcfXTiqzVJp-Qi7oNalglHl_dGsk8yEkz0we4BpXqutpyu8fDVGJs-QNbX7FV-j/s1600/IMG_3916.JPG" width="640" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">The view from St. Christopher's Hill, Santiago </td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div style="text-align: center;">
What I wish to discuss now, however, is one very specific aspect of the trip--yarn shopping. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I suspect I'm not alone in that, when I get the opportunity to go somewhere new and exciting, I set aside a certain amount of time to find the fiber supplies in that place. Remind me to tell you sometime about the full day I spent hunting down yak wool in Northern India (I found it! But it wasn't easy).</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<div style="text-align: center;">
Of course, South America is known for producing lots of fiber--especially llama and alpaca, as well as the fleece of a rare and very soft animal known as a <span style="background-color: white; font-family: , sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23px;">vicuña.<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Mama and baby <span style="line-height: 23px; text-align: start;"><span style="font-size: x-small;">vicuñas (<a href="http://www.diarioanimales.com/wp-content/uploads/vicunas-mama1.jpg">source</a>)</span></span></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Well. A few years ago when I was in Bolivia, I bought some beautiful lace weight 100% alpaca yarn, with which I was quite pleased indeed (and which was significantly less expensive than it would have been in the States). I wasn't really able to find shops with a large selection of weights and blends, though. On this trip, acting on a tip from a fellow crafter at the wedding, I did quite a bit better. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Santiago, it turns out, has its very own yarn district.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And here's what I got: Three skeins of bulky, thick and thin wool; one skein of bulky mixed alpaca and wool; three balls of sport weight 100% baby alpaca; and three skeins of worsted weight alpaca and wool blend. I was also unable to resist a hairpin lace loom, and a small (20 by 20 cm) wooden peg loom (not shown). I was, needless to say, quite pleased.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLEEar6hjGgkowF3ZrxWW6ZYGE-F8AL3LEc2Vd2PuisfQeEC5um2c62XRJQwM3MwjnRxiVwcWPEsEjF1RDuOKlAhEoOVxn-s6sYfyhoIGFHWn7xmpVmEtAVPbRL2asuYOgXhsIzzCsQxbs/s1600/IMG_3924.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="478" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLEEar6hjGgkowF3ZrxWW6ZYGE-F8AL3LEc2Vd2PuisfQeEC5um2c62XRJQwM3MwjnRxiVwcWPEsEjF1RDuOKlAhEoOVxn-s6sYfyhoIGFHWn7xmpVmEtAVPbRL2asuYOgXhsIzzCsQxbs/s1600/IMG_3924.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I'm terrible at directions, so I won't even try. I do think I can provide enough info for somebody else to find the shops; there are probably around ten of them, and they carry a wide range of yarns, from acrylic to cashmere. Most of the yarn brands I haven't encountered in the US before, and the prices are absolutely lower than I'd expect to find where I live. So, if you're every in Santiago, here's what you do: Go to the Mercado Central (which is easy to find, and has its own metro stop). Ask around for the yarn shops, which are in a couple of blocks just off the main market. Fair warning: all the shops were closed on Sunday.</div>

Amusingly enough, it was in the mid 90s during this trip (Summer, of course, in South America). I could barely stand to touch the woolens once I got them back to my hotel. Now that I'm back to Winter in Portland (gray and chilly; perfect sweater weather), I am quite excited indeed to plan a project.</div>

Here's my second weaving project! I really love the texture and color patterns; weaving keeps the handspun in neat rows, whereas the loops in knitting and crochet tend to change up the color patterns I create in the spinning/dyeing process. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I used a raw silk warp thread in dark blue, which seems to have worked quite well (handspun is often not strong enough for warps, I was told). The biggest learning experience for me in this project has to do with the density of weaving. I used one heddle per thread for the warp, which ordinarily would have resulted in a fairly loose weave. In this case, my handspun is just too damn bulky. I love the fabric that this created, but it's far too stiff to work well as a scarf. It would make a great material for a laptop or tablet case, a bag, or (someday!) a rug.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Preparation and process: I didn't actually use all of the yarns I set up for this. I think I only needed two or three skeins. Weaving seems to take less yarn than knitting or crochet; lesson learned. The yarns are a mix of llama, BFL wool, and alpaca. I also used corespun yarn for one section, which resulted in a fuzzier fabric, with the warp barely showing at all. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrbmr-n7txb7q1FIqPMqy8VkIlsBMO35MYPXl4FRxYI4IVY3SaWwxw5gBNsLRR8D2IRB5DPAymFgvNEhe79UyNYppJnt4VCQGJhT5CBPpfgdzOL-AyeBEJv3DcQ08fNp0IHX4-f9SlGXPd/s1600/handspun+weaving+1.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrbmr-n7txb7q1FIqPMqy8VkIlsBMO35MYPXl4FRxYI4IVY3SaWwxw5gBNsLRR8D2IRB5DPAymFgvNEhe79UyNYppJnt4VCQGJhT5CBPpfgdzOL-AyeBEJv3DcQ08fNp0IHX4-f9SlGXPd/s1600/handspun+weaving+1.png" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The finished product: Like I said, the scarf is too stiff to wear. What the heck, though, I'll display it this way for the moment. But look at all the pretty colors and textures! The corespun section is in the right, center. </div>

</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I've been working on expanding my handspun knits, of late. These two cowls are very simple, but they have a great presence! They're also quite warm, and very comfortable to wear.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This first cowl is long and multi-textured, in a mix of BFL wool, alpaca and llama handspun. The center portion is recycled, re-dyed thick and thin merino wool. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This one is primarily a combination of two corespun alpaca and llama yarns, in pinks and purples--quite girly, and with a touch of sparkle spun in throughout. I edged the bottom in a handspun boucle. I love how soft and squishy corespun yarn can feel when knit up; it has a distinct texture that feels wonderful to wear. </div>

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I actually only attended one fiber festival this year, in New Jersey, in addition to my lovely visit to <a href="http://www.miloknows.com/2013/07/to-source-cedar-haven-farm-estacada.html">Cedar Haven Farms</a> over the summer. And now that Portland's chilly/rainy season is truly beginning…</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Something like <a href="http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_mbsos5BNWE1qdcz90o1_500.jpg">this</a>. For a few months. Sigh.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
I find it necessary to reminisce about late summer, and the opportunity to meet fiber animals that it provided. This was the <a href="http://www.newjerseyfairsandfestivals.com/362348-sheep-fiber-festival-lambertville-new-jersey-september-2012.html#.UnfgpqX1DOU">Sheep and Fiber Festival</a> in Lambertville, NJ (which my non-crafty mother was kind enough not only to attend with me, but to actually bring to my attention in the first place).<br />

Alpaca; sheep of many varieties; llamas. This is the festival where I learned the term "fiber pet;" it is now a concept etched in my heart and memory. Someday, when I do not live in a one bedroom apartment in reasonably densely populated SE Portland...</div>
